Phantasmagoria is an exhibition of the the American artist Stephen Sack who will be exhibiting his photographs at the Sofitel Brussels Le Louise from the 7th of December 2018 until the 15th of February 2019.
The exhibition : PHANTASMAGORIA
Exhibited is a series of photographs taken from ancient and damaged hand painted magic lantern glass slides.
The artist employs a scientific light destined to photograph amoebes in water. In this light, the glass becomes dark and invisible elements on its surface appear.
The result is a beautiful night vision of fantasy ranging from children’s sweet dreams to those of ghosts and fantoms. The exhibition is a continuation of Sack’s photographic preoccupations since more than 30 years. These diverse series, collectively known as Chromosomic memory find their conceptual axis in time, traces, memory and forgetfulness.
The diverse objects include among others: distressed coins, illegible epitaphs, bird dropping, gargouilles, stereo cards seen as panoramas, the backside of engravings from Buffon’s Natural History, burnt matches…
Stephen Sack, laureate of the ‘Prix de la Jeune Peinture’ at the Palais des Beaux-Arts of Brussels, has exhibited as well at: the British Museum of London, Rijkmuseum, Auguste Kestner Hannover, Musée Art & Histoire de Bruxelles, Gallery James Danziger in New York, National Museum of Archeology of Lisbon, Buffon Museum of Montbard in France, Musée Carnavalet of Paris, and at the Kunsthalle in Dusseldorf.
Declaration of the artist
“I strive to project my imagination through macro photography of small distressed objects that have been lost or forgotten, transformed through time. These objects are empowered with the capacity to reemerge as symbolic images of the sedimentary layers of our collective memory.
I tread a thin line between a scientific / archaeological approach and an intuitive / alchemystical understanding. Time acts as the essential transforming agent.
I use the tool of photography to document my imagination searching for the fantastic inside and outside the portals of perception.”
